Product Review: Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote

Image
The firestick works by connecting to WI FI of your home network. The two absolute requirements are that you have to have high speed internet and a WI FI connection. You don't have to Amazon Prime to use it, but then you will not have access to Amazon Prime Video and Music. You can connect it to other services you already subscribe to, such as Netflix or premium channels from your cable provider (such as HBO). The overall installation process goes like this: 1. plug in the firestick into the TV 2. when it boots it prompts you to log into your Amazon account 3. then you can enable individual channels (the activation instructions will be displayed on the screen) You can control the user interface with the remote included in the package. You can use arrows on the remote to navigate or you can use voice commands. The voice recognition is pretty good. I am able to move the fire stick between several TVs. I am able to watch Amazon Prime content as well as Verizon FIOS channe...

Product review: HP LaserJet Pro M477fdn Multifunction Color Laser Printer with Built-in Ethernet & Duplex Printing (CF378A)

Image
I am using this laser printer in a home office with Linux, win10, and win XP computers. All three operating systems connected without trouble. 1. Linux - I had to install HPLIP from repository, support for the driver is built into the Linux OS. I was able to connect the printer both as USB printer and network printer. 2. Windows 10 - the driver for win10 is included on the CD ROM that came with the printer, searching for the network printer during configuration found the printer and configured it. 3. Windows XP - the driver for XP is not included on the on the CD ROM but it is available from the HP website. The quality of the print is nice and crisp. The black color is not as bold as the old laser printer, but very clear. The colors are bright and clear. Both the scan and the print are fast (the first scan/print has a short pause for the printer to warm up, but the rest of the pages are very quick.) The FAX (the sending part) is fairly slow,...

Product review: RecorderGear FD50 USB Flash Drive Voice Recorder 8GB

At the time I am writing this review the price of this recorder is around $90 and for the price I expected a better all purposes recorder. It did a reasonable job recording human voice, but did a very poor job recording music. The recorded music is clipped and sounds distorted. When I held the recorder in my hand the recording picked up a lot of crackling. I did not purposely do anything to generate that noise but as you hear in attached audio the difference between me holding the recorder and having it put down is dramatic. The recorder looks like a regular flash memory stick. To make it discrete looking the interface that makes it work is not obvious. The recording switch looks like a loop for hanging the recorder on a key chain. The switch has three positions left, center, right. The center position is off, and left/right are the two modes. The two modes are "continuous recording" and "voice activated recording". They are indicated by a small dash and t...

Product review: Wireless Earbuds, Chin-Best Touch Control, Blouttooth earbuds

Image
Chin best ear buds sound good and fit comfortably in my ear. The Bluetooth sounds nice and clear when I have the phone in my pocket, but at a longer distances then my pocket the bluetooth reception breaks up a bit. The ear bud fill my entire ear cavity but don't stick out.  I can wear these ear buds for several hours without any problems. To charge them one must use a proprietary charging cradle.  The cradle works nicely, but it comes a very short charging cord which I found rather inconvenient. Fortunately, the cradle can be charged by any micro USB cable and I am using it with my own longer cable.  Play time of these ear buds is  2-3 hours one one charge. Pairing with my phone was easy.  I needed to press my fingers on both ear buds at the same time for a few seconds and that started the pairing process.  The device appears as "i8s". Overall, very comfortable fit, good sound. On the negative side one charge does not last all day. YOu can locate these ear...

Product review: SmartOmi Bluetooth Neckband Headphones V4.1

Image
The best thing about SmartOmi  headphones is the distance at which Bluetooth continues to play music without breaking up.  I am able to leave the phone on the second floor study and walk down to the first floor and still hear the music without any breaks.  Only when I go to the corner of the kitchen does the music begin to break up.  This is better than my other bluetooth headphones I own. I also like the vibrating alerts - the headphone vibrates when I turn it on and off (so I am sure the batteries are not being wasted), I don't need to look at the light. It also vibrates when the phone rings.  Phone reception is good. The ear pieces are comfortable, the short wires to the band don't tangle because they are short. On the negative side I am not in love with having something touching my neck when the weather is warm. It makes me feel hotter. When I am wearing a shirt with color I put the band under the collar, but I don't wear them all that often especially in th...

Product review: Miracase Wireless Sports Bluetooth Headphones In-Ear

Image
Miracase Bluetooth headphones paired flawlessly with my two phones.  The sound is nice and clear without distortion.  The Bluetooth range is fine with the phone resting in my pants pockets phone or on the table while I work.  However, if I walk away about 5 feet the sound begins to break up.  I use these headphone while working to cover up the distracting conversations and noises by pleasant music.  The headphones are comfortable and I am able to wear them all day long.  The range is a bit less than advertised but perfectly fine the way I use them (pocket or desk).  I really like how comfortable they are and their sound.  They are much better then having wired headphones as I can move between my two computers without having to worry about the cord. Update: I have been using the head phone for about a month. I noticed that the distance at which Bluetooth streams music without breaks decreased.  Now when I carry the phone in my pants pocket the...

Product review: YouDuo 4 in 1 Wireless RF Item locator Key Finder

Image
Why is it that when I misplaced my keys I am always in hurry and least effort a delay? Well, this is not a problem anymore. This key finder works very well saving me time and frustration.  The beep is reasonably loud, I can hear it if the keys are in my jacket pocket, for example. The package includes four color coded receivers and a transmitter with buttons.  The package comes with CT2032 for the receivers, you need to provide two AAA batteries for the transmitter. All buttons sound fairly similar. I show how they sound in my video. What could be better? I would nice of the receivers were even smaller.  I show them in my video on 1/2" grid for size reference.  You can find it on Amazon by following this link. Product review ★★★★★

Product review: Venta Airwasher 2-in-1 Humidifier & Air Purifier - LW45

Image
Our heating is forced hot air and the air gets very dry. I used a variety of humidifiers through the years and it was always a compromise between the noise and improved air quality. On the low setting Venta air washer is so quiet that I had to keep checking if was on or not when the first time I was using it. On medium and high level I can hear some white noise but it is still very quiet. I am a light sleeper and this humidifier on the low settings is really the only that does not bother me when I am trying to fall asleep. On the negative side to keep Venta air cleaner going you need to treat the water it uses continuously. This is done with Venta treatment additive. Two small starter bottles are included and Venta LW45 requires the use of both bottles at the same time. These two bottles are sufficient for 10-14 days of use. The additive is available in a larger 35 fl. oz bottle which is sold for $19.00 (sufficient for 5 months use). In addition every 6 months the airwasher needs to be...
